He comes to memoir as to a legal deposition, and seems intent on leaving nothing out. Baseball writer and editor Roger Angell approaches memoir like a grandfather gathering a lifetime of scattered notes, or a snowed-in raconteur holding forth before the fire. Joan Didion has been confronting loss through her entire writing life. It is as if she had been preparing all along, as a person and as a writer, for the events she would face between December and August Months of touch-and-go rehabilitation followed. It is difficult to imagine enduring such a direct and extended onslaught of loss.
The way you got sideswiped was by going back. But that sort of reality-show titillation is not what Didion wants most for a reader or for herself. She wants to go deeper, to penetrate. It appears that the genres she had always used—novels, essays, political journalism, studies of place—were no longer appropriate for the person she became after the events of — They left her unmoored. Although she had written about herself and her life in parts of her earlier nonfiction, she needed now, for the first time, to write a full-fledged memoir, placing herself as both observer and subject at the center of her seasoned, shrewd scrutiny.
A significant problem with The Year of Magical Thinking is that Didion could not shed old habits of language or tone as she sought to write in a new genre and about the rattled new self she had become. I had no prognosis. She seems fully aware that language as she customarily used it would not work. Life changes in the instant. You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends. In many ways, the most moving aspect of her memoir is the way Didion reenacts her befuddlement and derangement as she searches for the understanding that continues to elude her.
Didion in her grief tries to live in the now, tries to manage. Clearly, what Didion had to manage was so awful that management was not enough. Preparation was not enough, either. Not only had a pacemaker been implanted six months earlier but Dunne had been having a series of atrial fibrillation episodes followed by procedures to correct them. And it suggests why memoir, a genre Didion had never used at book-length before, was where she turned.
She needed to discover what her experience meant to her. I look for resolution and find none. Full of doubts about the possibilities of self-knowledge, having seldom as a writer strayed far from the core material that constitutes the memoir, McGahern makes the only choice he must have seen open to him. He raids the fiction. The memoir is more than familiar to a McGahern reader; it presents the same settings, same characters, the same events, sometimes almost scene by scene, all told in the same lyrical prose laced with fury which defines his fiction. Neither does the fact that it is a hesitant, sometimes repetitive, misshapen book, with the first two-thirds of its pages devoted to the first ten years of his life and the remainder a rushed summation of the next sixty-one years.

Remember what I said about memoir being about change?
If it is serving anything other than that like your need for validation or to prove yourself right then simply keep writing in your journal and keep healing. Let your story come out and be as messy as it needs to be. Treat yourself very kindly during this process. I remember that several times while writing the first draft of my memoir about ten years spent in a cult , I would be writing a painful scene and many strong emotions would come up.
Eventually, the wave of feeling would pass. If you find this sort of thing is happening too often or is too painful for you, take a break. Set the book aside and come back to it in a few weeks or months when you are ready.
When your first draft is done and you are ready to begin to take it from organized chaos to something useful, this is the moment to recognize that you are taking off the hat of the person who had the experience you are writing about, and putting on your professional author hat. At this point, the book is becoming something that is no longer for, or even about, you.
It is now becoming something for your readers. This requires a somewhat ruthless approach to shaping the story from something deeply personal that has been for your eyes only into something that will inform and educate others. I bumped into someone recently who is writing a memoir about her experience escaping from an abusive marriage. The manuscript that she is shopping around to publishers is currently , words long. I applaud this author for writing down all that pain. But I could tell that she was really struggling to make the switch from first draft mindset to author mindset.
Were those words necessary for her process and healing? Yes, absolutely, and good for her for doing all that work. When we write a memoir about a difficult subject, it is not only difficult for us, it will likely be difficult for the reader as well. Someone who picks up a book about living with bipolar disorder, for example, is likely either having that experience themselves, or knows someone who is. Your job as the writer in that situation is to serve the reader by being informative and truthful without being self-indulgent.
Keep going. You will be able to find the right way to balance these elements. This is one painful mistake I made. Without realizing what I was doing my memoir was my first book I choose a story editor who had very little sensitivity and who was more interested in stroking her own ego than helping me shape my draft into something valuable for readers. Look for an editor who has experience with memoir. Also, try to find one with whom you feel you have a good personality fit. If you are an experienced author you may have editors you already work with, which is fantastic. This book is so personal and close to your heart that ideally, you want someone with a very skilled hand to help you.
You might not be able to do it. You can always come back to it in a year or three years or a decade. There will be a tipping point when you do feel objective enough about the experience to write about it for others. I still get emails from people thanking me for writing it, nearly ten years after it was published. A memoir about a difficult subject can be an enormous gift to the people who are in the same, or similar, position you were in.
Remember what I said at the outset of this post? Art connects us. Writing your memoir can be healing for you and for others. It is a sacred gift to be able to be honest about your experience so that others might benefit. Have you ever considered writing a memoir about a difficult time in your life?
