And more riskily, he strays farther from Hill House than previous adaptations do, which sacrifices some of the claustrophobia that a good haunted house story can generate.

The Haunting of Riley Watson: A Haunted House Mystery- Book 1

Hill House is constantly anthropomorphized in the book, but instead of using design to show it to us, Flanagan has a character deliver a long monologue about how the house is like a body. Like other directors contributing to the current renaissance of mature horror , he is drawn to the psychology of traumatized characters, to how apparitions can seem like the manifestation of a fragile mental state. Instead of telling the story from the book about a group of strangers who are invited to the house by a doctor to study the supernatural, the series dispenses with this medical conceit and focuses on the dysfunctional relationships in a family who once stayed in Hill House.

That family, a couple Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas with five children, moved into the house in order to renovate and flip it. Instead of making a profit, they paid dearly, and what happened in the house haunts each child through adulthood. Its fractured plot, darting back and forth from childhood to adulthood, underlines how horrific events lodge themselves in your psyche. Early on, we see the father frantic, gathering his kids and fleeing to a hotel.

Whatever happened that night hangs over all 10 episodes, and before revealing it, Flanagan shows how the past haunts the present. Steven Crain writes a tell-all book that makes him famous, but it also divides the family because his sister Shirley Elizabeth Reaser thinks he is exploiting family tragedy. It was alright I had a hard time getting into this book.

It drug on forever and the ending was nothing I believe it was a free book Oct 11, Sharon R Nichols rated it it was amazing. The characters all were interesting and I didn't want to put the book down until finished it. Great ending. I recommend this story. Feb 11, N rated it it was ok. The suspense is excellent, Mr Lewis does an amazing job at creating a creepy atmosphere for the book. The biggest disappointment came from the fact that nothing happens. There isn't a coherent plot, no real explanation or resolution for what is going on. Oct 24, Virginia Allen rated it liked it. Not a book I would read again.

I was not thrilled with having to read through so much filler to get to the point. I also didn't like the idea of just selling the old house rather than it burning or something to clear the property. This just left it to be someone else's problem. Nov 28, Miss Sharon L Wells rated it really liked it. A good read with some chilling moments I thought the book had the right amount of suspense and spine tingling moments throughout. I like haunted stories and this one kept me reading until the end. Jan 23, Emily M Fagan rated it liked it. Just meh There was some suspense but really had a poor ending to the book.

There was little closure and really no resolute to the characters.

Very vanilla. Not even scary. Not a book I would recommend to a friend. The end. Oct 23, Linda rated it really liked it. Evil from past Interesting story! Tamara had a hard childhood. Tamara now grownup must face her forgotten years and deal with her mother who abandoned her.

I recommend this book. If the intention of the author is to publish a serial, it should be clearly noted in the description. This is not book 0, this is part 1 of a book that when published completely, will be a terrific read. I give the story, that I read so far 4 stars.

My rating for the "book", however is 1 star, It is not a complete book it is part 1 and it should be labeled as such. Hate cliffhangers! I'm sorry, I don't care who the author is, I hate cliffhangers. If the book ends that way it should say so in bold letters. The story is great. Gave four stars because of the cliffhanger. No one wants to reach the end of a book and find its not the end. Especially if the can't download the next book right away. So if you get this book to ahead and get the next on asap.

The main character is interesting and isn't always believable but is still fun. Riley is too smart and Tyler ne Hate cliffhangers! Riley is too smart and Tyler needs a night at the police station. Oliver isn't really there. Read the book. Plenty of thrills and laughs. Madame Lucia has a youtube following as a flamboyant medium. She is an actress and not a real psychic and she hams it up for the fans as this is her only source of income.

One thing happens and her show is off the air. The father of a fan asks Lucia to come to his resort all expenses paid plus money to verify if his daughter is a psychic or needs a trip to a head doctor. Lucia takes him on. Once she gets there, she starts seeing the same things that the girl does or real ghosts. Now I have to buy the next book in the series. Jun 17, Wanda rated it it was amazing. Haunting and mystifying! This is the second book in the series and I'm completely hooked! Lucia is a once known fraud physic, but now she is able to see and talk to the dead.

She is supposed to find out who started the fire that killed forty nine people at the Kings and Queens Inn years ago with a little help from a very dead Odette, all the while protecting Rily. I highly recommend recommend reading this series. To the author Alexandria Clarke, please hurry with the third book! Very Good! I usually read mysteries rather than ghost stories but I was intrigued by this book!

Not a fan of cliffhangers but as long as I don't have to wait months or more it's doable. I enjoyed the building of the characters and really glad there was no vulgarity. Really not a fan of the use of the Lord's name in books or movies. I think clever authors are able to portray emotions without the use of profanity. Perhaps the author is young. Still an interesting read. Good read The book starts out slow and silly; not really my kind of story, but a chapter of two into the book things picked up quickly.

The storyline changed from silly to intriguing. The character's are very relatable and the suspense keeps building to the point i just couldn't put it down! Thank goodness I had book 1 waiting for me to grab as this ends in a great cliffhanger. I suggest have book 0 nd 1 on hand at the same time!!

I picked it up first thing in the morning and finished it in an hour. Jul 03, Brenda Moser rated it really liked it. This is an intriguing haunting story with strong characters. It starts out slowly but picks up a few chapters in.

The author does a great job bringing a multitude of characters , living and dead , and building the suspense ,keeping you guessing. It does end in a cliffhanger. I enjoyed reading. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given. Jul 18, Jane rated it it was ok. I was rather disappointed. It felt like a whole other book was written before this and I somehow missed it.

The ending was also disappointing, I understand it is a series, but this felt like they cut the book into portions. Jul 23, Adison Runberg rated it it was amazing. This was a fun spooky read, with possible appeal to younger and older generations. I enjoyed the identity battles within Madame Lucia and thought Daniel was quite well written as well.

I can't wait to read more from Alexandria Clarke. This book only gets a five star rating if there is a continuation of this story! I loved it and I want more! It kept me on edge and sleepless until both books were read. Gonna get some sleep then search around for the next book that better be out there!

To bad it's a be continuing series. I prefer self standing. To bad was a continued series. Other than that was quiet good. Just wished didn't leave cliff hanger. Jun 12, Sheila Harrington rated it really liked it. I don't really like books with no real ending, is there another book in this serues? How many more books about this subject are there and when can we read them?
